Narragansett is a quintessential seaside town located on a narrow strip of land the runs along on the shore of Narragansett Bay in southeast Rhode Island. Locals call the town "Gansett," and as of the 2010 census, the population was 15,868. Several villages are located either wholly or partially within the town of Narragansett; Saunderstown, South Ferry, Bonnet Shores, Narragansett Pier, Point Judith, Galilee, Great Island, Salt Pond, Mettatuxet and Jerusalem. The town is known for its' beautiful beaches. The most popular are; Narragansett Town Beach, Scarborough State Beach and the beaches of Point Judith. Narragansett Town Beach is located in the center of town and charges a fee for use. Scarborough State Beach charges a small fee for parking only. It contains two areas; North and South, and offers pavilions, picnic tables, a boardwalk and observation tower. Roger Wheeler State Beach and Salty Brine State Beach are both located at Point Judith. This is the southernmost point of Narragansett, and both beaches are protected by the breakwaters of Port Galilee. Things to do in the area include hiking, biking, fishing, sailing, kayaking, tennis, and golf. The town of Narragansett is known for its' landmark called The Towers, which is the entrance to the Narragansett Casino. This historic structure is the only remains of the Narragansett Pier Casino built in the 1880s, which was the center of social life in the area at that time. The structure passes over Ocean Road along Rhode Island Sound, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Narragansett is also home to several other historic districts, which include Colonial Revival, late-Victorian and Bungalow/Craftsmen-style architecture.

Narragansett Weather & Climate

Block Island's weather is classified as oceanic. It's greatly influenced by the surrounding ocean and prevailing offshore winds. Summers are warm with average highs in the upper 70s. Autumn and winter remains warmer than the mainland, due to the oceanic influences. By the same token, spring and summer remain cooler than the mainland because the ocean stays cold during this time period. Block Island lies approximately 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the Outer Lands region, which is a coastal archipelago that resulted from the Wisconsonian Laurentide glacier retreat some 22,000 years ago.
